Concrete
After many albums within bands and other collaborative projects ‘Concrete’ marks Andre van Rensburg’s 1st solo album project. Recorded and produced in Taipei from 2006 – 2007, it reflects the surreal environment of a modern world in conflict with itself, finding beauty and sensuality in the chaos of the modern city.
Blending rock, jazz, classical and ambient styles and textures, it creates an album that will startle, amuse and entrance.
The music on Concrete is highly intense and is filled with unexpected turns and changes, a sonic blend of dissonance and harmony. Rather than seeing his work as ‘experimental’ or ‘avant-garde’ Andre prefers to describe his music as ‘hyper-realism’, reflecting daily life and thought in sound texture. As such it does not always have predictable repetitions or outcomes. Never taking himself too seriously, however, ‘Concrete’ is still highly enjoyable, playful and humorous in its experimentations.
Unfinished Cities
Recorded in studios and halls from Johannesburg to Japan this release also features world-renowned experimental/virtuoso koto player Chieko Mori on koto and Yuko Ikoma performing on accordion and toy piano.
On his solo guitar tracks, André uses silence as much as his seemingly schizophrenic struggle with the instrument to try and bring as much out of the guitar as possible. Undoubtedly André’s best playing to date.
Having spent the last 4 years living in Asia, here is music steeped deep in ritualistic and ancient ideas, from the troubled soil of Africa to the dark alleys of modern Tokyo.
Scopophilia (7 etudes for solo bondage guitar)
This entire 7 song album has been connected to form an affordable 38 minute ‘one track’ download. Undefinable and uncompromising, narrow descriptions that is just part of the beauty and startling originality of this recording/composition.
Those faint of ear should probably look elsewhere…
This is van Rensburg’s 2nd release of 2008, and his very 1st release to feature only guitar. No edits or overdubs, although one track has Andre playing 5 micro-tuned guitars simultaneously. Scopophilia is only available for digital download at this time.
